Shows Full of Story Ideas & Photo Ops
Countless possibilities for articles, stories, and photo essays await you on the show floor. The artisans who exhibit at these shows are fascinating people with interesting life stories, who design and handcraft extraordinary things. Here are just a few examples:

Here are just a few examples:

  • Harold and Michele Shapiro incorporate recycled materials into their work as well as their life. The house they live in, which they built themselves, has floors milled from old maple airplane propellers. Their studio has a glass bottle wall. Their one-of-a-kind art objects incorporate recycled parts, aluminum, silver, turnings, glass and leather along with fine domestic and exotic woods. www.sdesigng.com
  • Kristy Goggio's whimsical bird paintings earned her a place at ArtExpo NYC, the world's largest fine & popular art fair, by topping hundreds of other entries in a competition run by Art Business News. www.studiogoggio.com
  • Rock climbing and jewelry making. Jeweler Heather Murray, who lives near Acadia National Park in Maine, occasionally works there as a rock climbing guide as a release from the tedious work involved in her craft. She also regularly teaches Vinyasa Flow. http://heathermurray-jeweler.com/index.html.
  • Candace Sherman believes that the stones she works into her jewelry creations have energy trapped within that is somehow transferred to the wearer. http://www.clsherman.com/
  • David Redwine experiences a zen like state when he is creating furniture. He recently stated, “Some trees seem almost eager to be transformed by the blade, while other species have ingrained memories of their former lives,” He sold his house to attend a year-long furniture making course in Devon, England. Among diverse outside interests, he coaches Special Olympians in track and field. www.redwinefurniture.com
  • The creative abilities of artists with disabilities are supported by the non-profit studio and gallery Flying Shuttles. The organization celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2009. http://bvcriarc.org/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.4005
  • Recycled, repurposed, or reinvented. Randall Kramer of Chicago, Illinois often creates furniture from manmade items created for other uses that are no longer needed for that purpose. You can see some examples of his repurposed work here: http://www.kramerdesignstudio.com/repurposed.htm. Randall also builds and donates birdhouses to benefit people living with HIV and AIDS.
  • Ronald Sekulski has designed products for the durable medical industry, consumer goods, industrial products and toys. He has won awards for outstanding design and holds several patents. He has lectured and conducted workshops globally on design, ergonomics, and innovation. rsekulski@msn.com
  • Edward Loedding has successfully merged cutting edge technology with traditional painting techniques to create rich and sensuous images on canvas. It took him 8 years of development to bring the results to market. http://www.edwardloedding.com/
  • Historical significance recognized. Artisan Stewart Crick created the “Blue Collar Table” for The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa’s permanent furniture collection. It will reside in the connector between the Historic Main Inn and the Vanderbilt wing. www.stuswoodworks.com
  • Clear Lake Furniture invites their clients to personally select the wood for their piece from the selection available at their workshop, which is housed in a restored antique barn. http://www.clearlakefurniture.com
  • Jiyoung Chung, whose work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Art & Design in New York, has developed a unique paper making technique on which he paints. artloverjiyoung@yahoo.com
  • Carole Katz combines traditional art techniques with modern technology to create fine art that combines art prints with stained glass and copper foil. www.carolekatzart.com
  • Jessica Pisano unites her black and white photography with oil, acrylic, watercolor, and gold leaf. www.jessicapisano.com
